Quem? Holandês, Cardiologista-Chefe, Divisão de Cardiologia do Hospital Rijnstate

O Quê? Publicou estudo de 13 anos de 'Experiências Quase-Morte' em 10 hospitais holandeses com pacientes sobreviventes a paragens cardíacas. Dos 344 pacientes monitorizados pela equipa holandesa, 18% tinham alguma memória do seu período de inconsciência, e 12% (1 em cada 8) tiveram aquilo a que os médicos designam por uma NDE "profunda". Os investigadores definem isso como uma memória do paciente em seu período de inconsciência que alcança seis ou mais pontos na escala publicada pelo Dr. Ken Ring no seu estudo de 1980 (Life at Death: A Scientific Investigation of the Near-Death Experience,Portsmouth, NH: Moment Point Press, 1985). Esta escala inclui, entre outras coisas, percepção fora-do-corpo, mover-se por um túnel, comunicação com luz, sentimentos de felicidade, observação de uma paisagem celeste, encontro com pessoas falecidas, retrospecção da vida, e a presença de uma fronteira.

What? Published 13-year study of NDEs observed in 10 different Dutch hospitals with survivors of cardiac arrest. Of the 344 patients tracked by the Dutch team, 18% had some memory from their period of unconsciousness, and 12% (1 out of every 8) had what the physicians called a "core" or "deep" NDE. The researchers defined that as a memory by the patient from their period of unconsciousness which scored six or more points on the scale published by Dr. Ken Ring in his 1980 study (Life at Death: A Scientific Investigation of the Near-Death Experience, Portsmouth, NH: Moment Point Press, 1985). This scale includes, among other things, out-of-body perception, moving through a tunnel, communication with light, blissful feelings, observation of a celestial landscape, meeting with deceased persons, life review, and presence of a border.

Quem? Norte-Americano, Psiquiatra, Director de Divisão e Professor do Departamento de Medicina Psiquiátrica da Universidade de Virgínia.

O Quê? Dedicou os últimos quarenta anos à documentação científica de memórias de vidas anteriores de crianças por todo o mundo. Coligiu mais de 2 600 (3 000?) casos em seus arquivos. Ian Stevenson publica apenas para a comunidade científica, e a sua escrita - densamente envolta com detalhes de pesquisa e argumentos académicos - é de dificil compreensão para o leitor comum. O Dr. Ian Stevenson oferece evidência científica convincente para a reencarnação. Contudo, Stevenson alerta que, embora a evidência seja sugestiva de reencarnação, mais pesquisa tem de ser efectuada.

Who? Ian Stevenson, M.D. is Director, Division of Personality Studies and Carlson Professor of Psychiatry, both a part of the Department of Psychiatric Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. He is the pre-eminent researcher in the study of reincarnation as well as being the leading scientist studying children who claim to remember (memory) previous lives. He has also made important studies of telepathy, near-death experiences, apparitions ("death-bed visions"), the mind-brain problem, and the survival of human personality after death.

What? Devoted the last forty years to the scientific documentation of past life memories of children from all over the world. He has over 2 600 (3 000?) cases in his files. Ian Stevenson publishes only for the academic and scientific community, and his writing—densely packed with research details and academic argument—is difficult for the average reader to follow. Dr. Ian Stevenson offers convincing scientific evidence for reincarnation. However, Stevenson cautions that, although such evidence is suggestive of reincarnation, more research must be conducted.

What? The internal inconsistencies and unwarranted assumptions of standard Theory of relativity have already been pointed out by dozens of scientists. The new paradigm in Physics, built through mathematics theoretical language and under experimental research, includes the model of the dynamic massfree energy aether (sub-divided into different levels of density) which creates, permeates and interacts with all matter and with density proportional to the density of any physical substance occupying the area of space concerned, increasing around large bodies such as stars and planets, acting as a refracting medium and affecting the speed of propagation of light and electromagnetic forces, etc. This conception - the structure of the invisible aether, working beyond matter - presents plausible alternative explanations for all the experimental data and astronomical observations currently cited in support of the special and general theories of relativity and, according to physicist Harold Aspden, gives the answer to the long awaited "Unified Field Theory" of physics:

 Why NDE Evidence is Ignored by Neal Grossman (2002)

« Resistance to paradigm change: Ever since the publication of Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, the concept of a paradigm has been a familiar, useful, albeit sometimes controversial, tool. The concept of a paradigm helps us considerably in understanding scientific revolutions, when dramatic changes occur involving deep-rooted assumptions about how things are or how things must be. All academics matriculate within the context of a specific discipline that trains its practitioners to think in terms of the currently operating paradigm. Once the operating paradigm has been internalized in the mind of the individual, other competing paradigms appear wrong and/or foolish.

To one who has internalized a paradigm, this way of approaching things appears to be right, reasonable, objective, and sensible. The paradigm itself is rarely questioned. It is the very water in which the academic philosopher swims, which is why it is so difficult for one who is immersed in the paradigm to see it as a paradigm, rather than as the way things "must be."  Someone operating out of a different paradigm appears to be out of touch with reality, irrational, and so on.

Intellectual arrogance: In addition to the normal kind of resistance with which any paradigm defends itself against change, the atheist paradigm of academia generally, and philosophy in particular, feels especially threatened by the findings of paranormal research. This is because intellectuals like to regard themselves as the highest manifestation of intelligence on the planet, if not in the universe. Embracing an evolutionary model according to which consciousness is correlated with brain development, intellectuals regard the human brain as the highest development of evolutionary forces, and an educated human brain as the highest of the high. Intellectuals like to feel that they are riding atop the crest of the wave of evolution.

This intellectual smugness is greatly threatened by paranormal research, especially the NDE, the results of which strongly suggest (I am tempted to say "clearly show") that the human intellect is by no means the highest form of intelligence. The "Being of Light" in many NDEs is often described as infinite intelligence and love; moreover, intermediate between humans and God there appear to be many forms of non-embodied intelligence, greatly superior to our own. And furthermore, NDEers report that they feel themselves to be more alive and intelligent while out of the body than in the body. NDE research seems to be confirming Plato's view that the body acts as a damper on the soul's native intelligence, weighing it down, so to speak, so that the soul is not able to manifest its full intelligence as long as it is embodied in material form.

Social and cultural taboo: This is the most serious and powerful source of resistance, because it involves not only the university system but our whole culture, indeed, our whole way of life. Despite avowals to the contrary, we live in a completely atheistic and irreligious culture. To be sure, most people profess a belief in a higher power of some sort, and many people attend religious services regularly. But religion, by which I mean religious values, plays no role in shaping the economic and political forces that structure and control our culture.

The "good life," according to religion, consists not in the pursuit of wealth, reputation, or power, but rather in the pursuit of right relationship with the divine. The values of our culture are diametrically opposed to the values of religion. Success in our culture is measured by wealth, reputation, and power; and the desires that are requisite for obtaining this success are greed and ambition. No one gets rich by being kind to competitors; no one gains political office by being loving towards their opponents. Religious values are paid lip service, but they are inoperative in our culture. Indeed, they are fundamentally incompatible with the values that do, in fact, drive our culture. »
